Venus stations retrograde at 16° Sidereal Pisces on March 1. Venus retrogrades are a time for us to reevaluate our relationships, comfort, or pleasure priorities. In the sign Pisces, where Venus exalts, we are reminded that the spiritual connection and cosmic purpose behind our relationships and pleasure is the top priority. During Venus’ transit through Pisces it will be in mutual reception with Jupiter in Taurus. This means that Both Venus and Jupiter are in each other's signs. This combines their energies and makes these two planets completely dependent on each other for executing their significations. Venus is love, sameness, relationships, pleasure, ease, healing, art, and aesthetics. Jupiter is beliefs, spirituality, perspectives and frameworks, psychological patterns, expansion and possibilities available to us. As Venus moves backwards, we will be challenged to reevaluate what we believe our feelings about relationships, aesthetics, and pleasure mean.
Due to the mutual reception between Jupiter and Venus right now, this retrograde is asking us to consider how we feel about the relationship roles and cultures we occupy in our lives. How do we feel about being a friend, lover, cousin, employee, parent? How do we feel about our nationality, race, gender, religion? How do we feel about other people in those roles and cultures? Pisces is the most intuitive sign and requires us to really lean on our internal knowing, and confront the biases we have about these roles and cultures that influence how we really feel about these things.
For most of human history, indigenous people have heavily relied on spiritual technologies and systems to structure and organize community roles. When girls would menstruate for the first time, they would go through a lengthy (often 6 months or more) process of spiritual initiation into womanhood. This initiation would be guided by the elder women of their community. They would be taught the spiritual importance women have in the community and the role they are to serve. Across many traditions, specifically the Dagara people of west Africa, this included learning about the psychic abilities available to women during their menses, the power of our dreams to tell the future (and the duty of women to share those dreams with the community), the power of women talking and communing with one another, an opportunity to reconnect their female essence to the Moon, and the spiritual power behind the vagina, womb, breasts, mouth, and eyes. To the Dagara, every woman and man is intentionally made that way to serve a very specific SPIRITUAL purpose. Being a woman, man, or gatekeeper (people with both male and female energy) is more about a relationship with God and balancing the cosmic energies of the universe than it is gender stereotypes like the ones we are familiar with in the west. As Venus retrogrades through Pisces, what will you realize about the spiritual purpose of the cultural identities you have been assigned? How will you reclaim God’s intention for your relationships?
Just like they have very specific and spiritual views on gender, the Dagara also have spiritual views on relationships and sex. To them, sex is a chance to go through a portal and meet Spirit. They believe that those who desire relationships that are only sexual are actually desiring a closer connection to Spirit. They have several different rituals to support married couples in staying together, resolving conflict, fulfilling their life purpose, and bringing their gifts to the community. The purpose of marriage, to the Dagara, is to couple with someone who has the same life purpose as you, so that together you may support one another in sharing your gifts and talents with the community for the benefit of everyone. “Romance” is a foreign concept because of the intentional community rituals they facilitate to make everyone feel equally loved and valued. Any conflict in a marital, platonic, or familial relationship is taken to the elders, understood through divination, and resolved through community ritual. Relationships are not just about having fun or connecting with people who are similar to you. Relationships are about spiritually evolving the individual and the community. This is what Venus’ retrograde through Pisces wants us to remember.
Soon, Venus will be joined by Mercury also retrograding through Pisces. Venus will station direct on April 12 and leave Pisces on May 30. Until then, we are invited to engage with our relationships and identities in a more intentional and spiritually minded way.
